Watcher
by Nathan Large, ADF Bard Laureate
Helios is watching well.
How useless, all our anxious stealth.
No Earthly action goes unseen.
There are no secret words or deeds.
Though mortal eyes might be deceived,
The Sun above sees all.
Night might seem a time
Concealed from heavens' prying eye,
But as Selene reflects His rays
Her mirror also shares His gaze,
So, though He seems to look away,
His vigilance hangs high.
Perhaps in deepest caves,
In cellar vaults or covered graves,
You think you’re safe from solar sight,
His gaze shut out along with light...
But are you certain you’ve defied
All radiation’s range?
The Sun is son of She
Whose Gleaming pierces things unseen,
So those who think themselves concealed
And shift against the common weal
Will find their folly full-revealed...
If only once deceased.
For the Greek Alphabet Oracle for Eta (H):
“Bright Hêlios, who watches everything, watches you.”
(per the oracle compiled by Apollonius Sophistes, 1995)
