Follow Your Heart

A friend asked why I believe what I do?
My heart tells me what is true
I answered him in honest sincerity.
But how do you know it is right?
The same as you believe that your path
Is the right one for you, I replied.
But how can you have faith in that?
In what? Was my simple inquiry.
In gods and spirits that you cannot see!
And you can see all of yours? I queried further.
No but that is not the point, he expounded.
But it is exactly the point I countered,
You believe by faith in what you cannot see,
Because you hope sincerely that it is so.
Well that is the essence of faith he retorted.
By that same standard I believe I responded.
I cannot understand such a view as yours
That defies all that you have learned.
It is because of what I have learned
By sight, by reading and knowledge earned
That caused me to follow the path chosen.
That makes no sense to me he answered back.
And it never will because your mind’s eye
Is closed to much around you.
Better to follow your heart along
The path that you have chosen, and I,
I will follow mine for there is no need
To both believe the same in every thing
But go where your heart leads
And allow me to do the same.
We parted he and I on cordial terms at least,
He to follow his hearts path,
And me to follow mine.
